Getting Started with HMRClever
Welcome to HMRClever! Follow these steps to set up your financial profile and start tracking your tax position.
Step 1: Add Your Income
Start by recording your income sources on the Dashboard or Transactions page.
- Click "Add Income" or use the income entry form on the dashboard
- Select the income type (employment, self-employment, dividends, etc.)
- Enter the amount and date
- Your tax calculation updates immediately
If you have multiple income types, add them all to see your complete tax position.
Step 2: Track Your Accounts
Add your financial accounts on the Accounts page to see your net worth.
- Add savings accounts, ISAs, and investments (assets)
- Add mortgages, loans, and credit cards (liabilities)
- Your net worth shows assets minus liabilities
Step 3: Set Up Budgets
Create monthly spending targets on the Budgets page.
- Click "Add Budget"
- Choose a category (groceries, entertainment, etc.)
- Set your monthly target amount
- Track your progress as you add expenses
Step 4: Mark Business Expenses (Self-Employed)
If you have self-employment income, mark business expenses to reduce your tax.
- When adding an expense, toggle "Business Expense"
- Set the business use percentage (100% if fully business)
- Select the HMRC category
- Your tax calculation automatically adjusts
Step 5: Plan for Retirement
Set your retirement goals on the Retirement page.
- Enter your current age and target retirement age
- Set your target pot value
- View your projected trajectory based on assumed growth
Tips for Success
- Update regularly: Add income and expenses as they occur for accurate tracking
- Check your dashboard: The dashboard shows your tax position and any warnings
- Read the guidance: Visit the Guidance section for tax tips relevant to your situation
- Upload receipts: For business expenses, upload receipts for HMRC record-keeping
